JOKING AROUND in the 1950's ! ..........

I found this photograph of me the other day. I've seen it before but have only just realised that I have my ' trick ' telescope in my hands !!!
You gave it to members of your family or friend's and, after they had looked through it, they were left with a black eye !!!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha !!!

Every Saturday morning after our Dad had given us our pocket money, I would go to the toyshop and spend most of it on jokes and tricks ! Black face soap ...

itching powder  ..... I had that bird warbler thing but it was called a ventriloquist aid ... you put it on the roof of your mouth and it helped you throw your voice !

I also had the bloody thumb. the chocolate biscuit finger and the trick cigarettes to name but a few.....
I must have been a right pain !!

I wish I'd kept them !

This is the other half of the photograph of my Dad ..... I've also just noticed that his right eye { our left } looks very black ..... I obviously tricked him and that's why the photograph was taken ! My Dad was good at taking a joke.

  3. Elisdon's in the TCR was the place to be seen (when you were 12). I had a black eye viewer. It was much shorter than yours and I used to tell people they could see a naked lady with it. Naughty Cro.

  4. My little Bella used the old stick of gum trick on me over the holidays and the thing actually smarted. Unless my memory fails me, they didn't use to pack such a punch. Oh how they laughed though.

  6. Jackie I was never into tricks and jokes - don't recall a joke shop in Torquay - but loved you sharing all this. You were definitely a fun girl. . . . . . .who grew up into a fun woman I can tell, and you really favor your lovely dad.

I have a photo of myself with a friend named Jackie taken in Trafalgar Sq. after the Coronation - guess what, you and I had the same hairstyle, but parted on opposite sides, as in your photo here including the slide (now called a barrette). Up until then I had very long hair which mum always plaited. I know I posted on this previously but here's the link again if interested in taking a peek.

Hope your week is full of fun and that nobody gets a faux black eye - but how about those American 'smoochy lips' - what fun for 2/-.

    Hugs - Mary

We have spoken about Trafalgar Square before haven't we Mary ..... I have a photograph of my Mum, sister and me in Trafalgar Square feeding the pigeons with the same hairstyle with the bow .... I think that every child looked the same !!!!
They were all good fun although I think the blow up legs in that advert were a bit pricey !!! XXXX

  7. These tricks were big things for us in the 1950s weren't they! Also given away in comics. A giggle and so simple but everybody loved them, even mums and dads approved. xx

  8. Jackie, did you ever get a cushion-like flat balloon that was slipped under someone before they sat down? It made a very embarrassing noise and we thought it was hilarious!

Pretty little girl, but then you had a good looking and very stylish daddy.
    Greetings Maria x

  9. The jokes were so dumb that to work, there had to be parents/other adults or older tolerant siblings who would play along. For me, it was my maternal grandfather, known as Pop. Thinking back now, I realize how patient and loving he was.

  11. Oh girl, you are too funny. I like that the photo of your father shows the blackened eye from your trick telescope. You were a scamp and you have proof. I also liked your earlier post about Dickens' home.
